One of the many reasons that I pushed Google Apps for Startup Army was because I knew the data wouldn’t be locked in. With the constantly changing technology landscape it’s impossible to predict where our infrastructure will end up. No matter what other solutions we chose or directions we went we’d either be able to build upon our current implementation of Google Apps or export all our data to a new solution. Last week, through a post on the The Google Apps Blog, I learned just how far this philosophy goes.
There is an entire Google Engineering team and site dedicated to how you can get your data in and out of Google’s realm. Google’s Data Liberation Front was apparently started out of their Chicago office a couple years ago and focuses on making sure the user has control of their data.
This is the type of openness and flexibility that makes Google and it’s applications the right choice for Startup Army…and once something better comes along (and it will) we know we’ll have the ability to upgrade to it (if it’s from Google) or switch over to it (if it’s not).
Thanks again Google, for giving your customers control of their data. There are some companies out there that could really use a lesson.
