Question
I frequently get asked “What Content Management System do you use?”
Answer
I have built several CMS systems over the years, from 100% homegrown solutions to the use of several good platforms. Here are the CMS platforms that are worthy of consideration:
- MCMS – I built a large-scale intranet/extranet for a Fortune 500 company on Microsoft CMS. Tons of control and flexibility at the expensive of developer hours. MCMS is likely overkill for what they are looking for, however. If you have a bunch of Windows software floating around and some servers, this could be cost effective.
- The *Nuke family (OpenNuke,DotNetNuke, PHPNuke) – I have never used any of these platforms, but a lot of developers sing their praises. OpenNuke is also the only good Java CMS that I know about, if that is a key factor for you. The *Nukes are open source platforms.
- Drupal – Drupal is a very popular CMS system right now. I have only played around with it, but a number of my peers rave about it. I am seriously considering this platform for future projects. If I had to guess, I’d say the a lot of new companies will end up on this platform. It is also open source.
- Joomla – I don’t have any experience or knowledge of joomla. I’m mostly putting this here ‘cuz all my Open Source peers seem to love it.
As for Wordpress, I think that will be limiting for them. It’s great for a single Blog, but I haven’t really seen it in action doing anything on a larger scale. Somebody please correct me if I’m wrong. Wordpress is more like a component for your overall CMS than anything else. It’s really a CMS-lite, IMO.
Hope this helps,
-=John

We only use Joomla! The framework is extremely powerful and allows us to build any and all functionality one can imagine.
I hear you on Joomla. I have heard many many exciting things about Joomla. My only concern is that, for most people, it can be a fairly significant step or development hurdle to overcome. Starting with a smaller prototype built on something like Ning is well worth the investment in time and possibly money before even touching Joomla.
If you’ve done CMS systems before, obviously this comment doesn’t apply.
