I have heard many many exciting things about Joomla. My only concern is that, for most people, it can be a fairly significant step or development hurdle to overcome. Starting with a smaller prototype built on something like Ning is well worth the investment in time and possibly money before even touching Joomla. If you've done CMS systems before, obviously this comment doesn't apply. I hear you on Joomla. I have heard many many exciting things about Joomla.
