Question

Many, many people out there are very interested in creating a social networking site using the cheapest resources available. Regardless of your budget and scope, I am frequently asked “Which are the best websites providing full support to create a social networking website?”

Answer

For the lowest cost of entry, I strongly suggest you investigate Ning first. For up to $80/month (not counting massive traffic), you can get a private-label, custom-branded social networking site with very powerful features. You can start off with an invite-only network and try it out for yourself. Ning will also give you a very strong baseline for which features you want and how they will actually function in your community. With just a day or two of work, you can do a great job…without requiring a designer or developer.

The next path is to go down the DIY (Develop It Yourself) path using the many providers available. I would avoid going down this path until you: a) have your requirements down and b) have tried to prototype your community in Ning. I can go into depth about these other providers, but you should investigate Ning first.

Best,
