Are You Telling a Great Story?

by Robert on August 6, 2009

Get in a room with fellow entrepreneurs, and inevitably you’ll be asked about your company and your elevator pitch.  You know, that pithy, concise and compelling 30-second overview about your company. Maybe you don’t have one, and when asked, you break out in a cold sweat ad-libbing your way through one. That’s okay, because practice makes perfect.

But one problem, elevator pitches are for geeks and VC’s.

My challenge is – how can I tell a compelling story about my company? Everyone loves stories, and a good one is fun to tell, and most always worth retelling. I look at it this way – elevator pitches are for business, but a good story is something your grandmother can easily retell to her friends, and also embellish with great pride.

Take a look at your Facebook wall and Twitter feed, aren’t your friends sharing stories with you? When was the last time someone shared an elevator pitch with you?

Sure, have a polished elevator pitch in your back pocket, but to make me really fall in love with your company, and your dream, I’d love to hear a good story.

So, does your startup have a great story to tell?
